European/International Affairs
Across the spectrum of the Ministry's activities up to 80 per cent of legislation plus a major part of overall funding comes 'from Brussels'. It is therefore crucial to stand, with determination, for the interests of North Rhine-Westphalia's citizen in the European Union. To this end, the staff in Düsseldorf co-operate closely with the Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Brussels (

North Rhine-Westphalia, and specifically the Ministry's areas of responsibility, is part of a powerful international network. In addition to good contacts with the European Commission and Parliament, it is of the essence that we have co-operation and exchange with national and regional governments abroad. Ministry personnel often talks shop with opposite numbers not only in adjoining the Netherlands and Belgium but other European countries and regions as well. Outside Europe, there are close links with Japan, North Rhine-Westphalia's Chinese partner provinces Sichuan and Jiangsu, Israel, the US and others.
